A message of love inspired today's Valentine, or Bálint Day
First of all, it is better to clarify that Valentine and Bálint Day are one and the same, since Valentine is the Hungarian equivalent of Bálint, and we celebrate the same saint under both names. Saint Valentine was a priest who died a martyr's death, whose legend exists in several versions. The story closest to today's love holiday is based on a farewell letter.
Saint Valentine was the patron saint of young couples, lovers, who, despite the decree of Emperor Claudius, married young people according to Christian custom. The emperor - because he believed it was better for his soldiers to be single, forbade them from getting married. But love overcomes all obstacles, and the good-natured Saint Valentine became the means for this. He was severely punished for his actions, and the emperor threw him into prison.According to another story related to the legend, Saint Valentine himself fell into the trap of love as a prisoner. He fell in love with the jailer's blind daughter, but their love was never consummated. On the day of Saint Valentine's execution - February 14, which was also a pagan fertility holiday - he sent his love a farewell letter, on which he simply wrote: "From your Valentine".
Saint Valentine - although he was a priest who died a martyr's death, was not officially canonized, but in 496 the pope ordered that Saint Valentine be remembered on this day instead of the pagan holiday. Thus, this day became the day of love messages, and then the day of lovers, and Saint Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.
